Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
