This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical biological terror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when the couple transition from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple face the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
