Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using such drugs must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Experts believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
