Our Premier Record of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Top Position.

At first glance, this work could seem more like a difficult scholarly challenge than a new pop album by an artist whose last single was a collaboration with an international K-pop star. Divided across four different sections and performed in thirteen languages, we have a dizzying orchestral-influenced opus that delves into female mystique, religious transcendence, and physical transformation, frequently through the lens of different female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme treated with grounded honesty elsewhere—is launched skyward here, carried by the constant sound of a major orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter among a vast list of collaborators. The pure ambition by itself makes the efforts of contemporary pop stars appear rather small.

Rising Above Scholarly Pretense

That Lux succeeds in avoid overly academic chin-stroking feels nothing short of miraculous, with complete credit belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not her first album to blend historical sounds with the present, the scale feel far higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk more pronounced. What truly raises her fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, dense arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of joy. Similar to the iconic artist at her peak, there is a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing that pulls you up in its whirlwind. When she is tearing your heart in two, you still desire to be right there through the ride.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit comes forth brightly during the stunning Italian song about a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool for more than four moments. Then, everything drops away, and there's a gleeful giggle and a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds down with comedic force. The song then shifts into the frenetic track driven by galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic of this album is that the listener never quite understand—or even want to know—where it will go next."

Almost each track concludes at a totally different place than where it began. A track explores the transient nature of fame with a delicate symphony before collapsing in digital cacophony. Another, a song that recalls the artist's earlier trap-infused style starts out moody and sinister, featuring prowling beats, until fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir arrive to soften its rough corners.

The Balance Between Experiment & Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album is navigating the line between bold innovation and broad appeal. It is little coincidence that it has achieved her highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of key markets: at its core a suite of utterly undeniable pop songs. One track performed entirely in the English language swells around a chorus that feels to gather increasingly nagging melodies as it spins upward. That trick gets repeated on another expansive ballad that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic hook.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- lover described as an "emotional terrorist".
  • Across the album, the singing carry a painted-on edge, akin to a storybook figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album represents pop on a maximalist level, a hungry reach for high Art amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It rejects solipsism for sublime elevation, creating a dramatic spectacle that masterfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. This is an abundant well of buried treasure that requires time to completely explore but doesn't feels like hard work. Where some big pop albums of 2025 seemed like a meager scraps, this record offers a sumptuous feast where the characters around it, some intoxicated on holy wine, flit from discussions about historical figures, the profound feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about useless partners. It is a modern-day musical from pop's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
