The speculation around this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible with a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
